Activities for Kids Learning Spanish - 8 Ways to Make Learning Fun

Activities for Kids Learning Spanish - 8 Ways to Make Learning Fun
Learning a new language can be hard and kids are often easily bored and frustrated with the same old lessons. The key to keeping them interested is to make learning fun. There are several different ways to incorporate learning into your children's day that they will enjoy.

What are some fun activities for kids learning Spanish to do?

Listen to Spanish music. Put on a CD while the kids are playing, or when you're in the car. Music is always a great way to get kids engaged and before you know it they will be singing along in Spanish without even thinking about it.
Watch Spanish TV Shows. If your kids' favorite cartoons or TV shows are available in Spanish, encourage them to watch one or two a day in Spanish. Younger children, in particular, will gain a lot of vocabulary this way as they associate the images on the screen with the words being spoken. You can also rent Spanish movies and watch them together as a family.
Take Kids To A Spanish Event Or Host Your Own. If any Spanish events are going on in your community, this is a great way to engage children in the language. There are always fun activities for kids learning Spanish to participate in and they will enjoy playing with the other kids as well. If there are no Spanish events or activities in your area - host your own! Have a Mexican-themed party, complete with a piñata, Spanish and Mexican food, decorations, clothing and games. Invite some of your kids' friends who are also learning Spanish and also some Spanish-speaking kids too.
Get Some No-Work Spanish Audio Books. Listening to No-Work Spanish Audio Books is a great way to incorporate learning into a busy family schedule. No-Work Spanish stories are stories read with each sentence said first in English, then in Spanish. At the end of each chapter, the chapter is repeated entirely in Spanish. Each No-Work Spanish audio book has a different reader, so listeners get used to variations in pronunciation. The stories can be used to learn Spanish from scratch or enhance your Spanish vocabulary and listening comprehension skills. No-Work Spanish stories are designed for all age levels, so they are perfect for popping in the car or home CD player while the kids are playing or doing other things.
Read Spanish Books. If your children like to read, this is a great way to expand their vocabulary and practice pronunciation. Younger children will especially enjoy colorful picture books and older children often like Manga style books. Just make sure the books are not above their comprehension level or they will get frustrated very quickly.
Have "Spanish Hour." For one hour a day, everyone must speak only Spanish. No English words allowed! When you come to a word or phrase you don't know, you have to act it out until someone figures it out. If someone says an English word, they get a point against them. At the end of the hour the person with the least points wins a prize. This is not only great fun for the whole family; it also encourages thinking in Spanish rather than translating in the mind before speaking. Before long, the kids will be speaking without even thinking about what they are trying to say. My friend who suggested this said this is one of her kids' favorite games.
Spanish Exchange - doesn't have to be in another country! Invite a Spanish child who is learning English over for a play date. They will end up helping each other learn each language. Who knows, it might develop into a great long-lasting friendship!
Spanish cooking Night - cooking is an activity for kids leaning Spanish to also learn about the Spanish, Hispanic or Mexican culture too. Get a Spanish cookbook (preferably written in Spanish) and get the kids to help you make the meal, speaking only Spanish the whole time. Say the ingredients and measurements in Spanish and explain the cooking methods in Spanish too. Once again acting out the words and phrases that they don't understand. You'll all have fun with this and get a healthy meal out of it at the same time.
These are just a few fun activities for kids learning Spanish to do to supplement their learning and have fun at the same time. Think about some of your kids' favorite activities - are there ways you can incorporate learning Spanish into them too?
